How to Protect Your Air Conditioner During Severe Weather on the Sunshine Coast

Storm Season on the Sunshine Coast? Time to Protect Your AC System

Severe weather is a fact of life on the Sunshine Coast — especially during the summer and early autumn months. From intense thunderstorms to tropical lows and the occasional cyclone, wind, rain, and flying debris can quickly turn into serious threats for outdoor equipment.

And few items are more exposed — or more expensive to replace — than your air conditioner’s outdoor unit.

Here’s what every Sunshine Coast homeowner should know about protecting their air conditioning system before, during and after a storm.

✅ 1. Secure Your Outdoor Unit

Most air conditioning units are built to withstand typical weather conditions, but high winds and airborne debris can cause major damage during a storm.

  • Ensure the outdoor unit is firmly bolted to a concrete pad or stable platform.
  • Inspect bolts and fasteners at the start of storm season.
  • If you’re in a high-wind area (e.g. coastal ridge or open property), consider adding a protective barrier or screened cage around your unit — but don’t block airflow.

💡 Don’t use generic tarps or plastic sheets — these can restrict airflow or become dangerous in high winds.

✅ 2. Switch It Off During Severe Weather

If a storm or cyclone is approaching, turn your air conditioner off at the wall and at the circuit breaker. This protects the unit from:

  • Power surges and voltage spikes
  • Lightning strikes
  • Compressor overload from fluctuating power
  • Electrical shorts caused by water exposure

Once the storm has passed and it’s safe, you can turn the system back on — but only after inspecting it for damage.

✅ 3. Clear the Surrounding Area

Loose outdoor items become airborne hazards in high winds. Take a few minutes to:

  • Remove garden tools, furniture, toys, and equipment
  • Trim back any nearby tree branches
  • Sweep away leaf build-up or debris near the unit
  • Check that drainage paths are clear

This reduces the risk of physical impact damage, blocked airflow, or drainage issues during heavy rain.

✅ 4. Protect Against Flooding & Water Damage

Low-lying areas or properties near creeks and canals can experience flash flooding during storms.

To minimise flood risk:

  • Ensure your outdoor unit is installed on a raised platform or concrete plinth
  • Install or check proper drainage around the slab
  • If your property is especially vulnerable, consider a weatherproof enclosure with open sides to maintain airflow

⚠️ Never operate your air conditioner if the outdoor unit has been submerged or waterlogged — this could cause major electrical faults.

✅ 5. After the Storm: Inspect & Act Quickly

Once conditions have cleared:

  • Visually inspect your outdoor unit for damage, dents, or dislodged panels
  • Check for signs of water pooling or electrical burning
  • If you notice odd noises, smells, or reduced airflow, do not restart the unit

Instead, call The Cool Shop to arrange a professional post-storm inspection. We can identify issues early, carry out any repairs, and safely recommission your system.
