Air Conditioner Playing Up? Try This First
It’s a hot afternoon on the Sunshine Coast. You grab the remote, hit ON… and nothing happens. Or worse — the lights flash, the fan runs, but there’s no cool air. Before you panic (or call us), know this:
✅ A simple reset can fix most common air conditioning glitches.
That’s right. Just like restarting your Wi-Fi router or rebooting your phone, resetting your air conditioner can clear minor faults and bring it back to life — no tools, no technician required.
What Does Resetting Actually Do?
Modern air conditioners are more like mini-computers than old-school appliances. They rely on control boards, sensors, communication wiring, and software to function — which means they can experience temporary errors, just like a laptop.
Common triggers include:
- Minor power surges or short blackouts
- Miscommunication between indoor and outdoor units
- Glitches in the remote or wall controller
- Sensor faults or overload protections kicking in
- Static build-up or circuit hiccups
Resetting your system forces it to power down completely, clear any temporary faults, and reboot clean — often resolving the issue without needing a technician.
Where Is the Isolator Switch?
To properly reset your air conditioner, you’ll need to use the isolator switch. This is usually:
- Located on a small weatherproof box near your outdoor unit
- Clearly marked with ON/OFF positions
- Designed to completely disconnect power from the air conditioner
- Installed as a standard safety requirement for servicing
It looks like a small grey box with a toggle — similar to a circuit breaker but located outside.
How to Reset Your AC Step-by-Step
Here’s how to safely reset your air conditioner using the isolator:
- Locate the isolator switch – usually next to the outdoor condenser unit.
- Switch it to OFF – this cuts all power to the system.
- Leave it off for at least 30 minutes – this gives internal components time to fully discharge.
- Switch it back ON – wait 2–5 minutes for the system to reboot.
- Test your system – turn it on via the remote or wall controller and see if the issue is resolved.
✅ This method works for both ducted and split system air conditioners.
Issues a Reset Can Fix
A proper reset can resolve a wide range of common faults, including:
- Flashing lights or blinking error codes
- AC not responding to the remote
- Indoor fan running but no cool air
- Outdoor unit not kicking in
- AC stuck in standby or non-functional mode
- Intermittent cooling/heating issues
If your system was operating fine previously and suddenly develops one of these issues, try the reset first. It could save you a service call.
When a Reset Isn’t Enough
Unfortunately, not all air conditioning problems can be fixed with a reset. If the issue persists after you’ve followed the steps above, it may point to something more serious, such as:
- Low refrigerant levels or leaks
- Dirty or blocked filters and coils
- Faulty sensors, PCBs or thermistors
- Damaged outdoor components
- Communication faults in wiring
- Capacitor or fan motor failures
In these cases, it’s best to get a professional technician involved. At The Cool Shop, we service and repair all major air conditioning brands — including Daikin, Toshiba, Haier and more.
We also stock replacement parts for common faults and can usually get your system up and running again quickly.
Bonus Tip: Don’t Forget the Indoor Filters
Sometimes, the issue isn’t electrical at all — it’s just dirty filters. Clogged filters can:
- Reduce airflow
- Trigger fault codes
- Make your system overheat
- Lower cooling efficiency
We recommend cleaning your filters every 1–3 months, especially in summer. It’s a simple task you can do yourself — or ask us to handle it during your next AC service.
